As Muslims across Nigeria celebrate Eid-el-Maulud, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has appealed to leaders at every level of government to put good governance, accountability and citizens’ welfare first.
A Moment for Reflection
CAN said the commemoration of Prophet Muhammad’s birth gives both citizens and leaders a chance to think about values such as compassion, justice, peace, selflessness and service to others.
Rising Frustration Among Citizens
The association’s statement arrives at a time of mounting concern over economic hardship, insecurity and the daily struggles of many Nigerian families. CAN urged political leaders to go beyond making pledges and to show real commitment through actions that improve people’s lives. It noted that Nigerians increasingly want governance that delivers measurable outcomes, not repeated assurances.
The President’s Message
President Bola Tinubu also addressed Muslims on the occasion. He encouraged them to reflect on the Prophet’s virtues, among them devotion, perseverance, tolerance, humility and selflessness, and asked religious leaders to pray for Nigeria and to inspire their followers to turn these values into service to the country. Beyond the Celebration
For CAN, the day should be more than a religious observance. The association sees it as an opportunity to renew commitment to peaceful coexistence, responsible leadership and national development. It called on Nigerians of all faiths to keep promoting peace and unity, while also holding public officials answerable for their duties.
Final Thoughts
With economic and security challenges still weighing on the country, the spirit of Eid-el-Maulud serves as a reminder that leaders are ultimately judged by what they do for the people they serve. For millions of Nigerians, the expectation is plain: fewer words, more action, and results they can see.
