Early Life and Family Background
Toyin Sokefun-Bello, widely known as TY Bello, is a Nigerian creative born on January 14, 1978. She has built a dynamic career spanning music, photography, songwriting, and humanitarian work.
She was born in Ogun State to the late Remi Sokefun, a respected television producer. Growing up, her father’s involvement in the media and creative industry significantly influenced her artistic development. Their home often welcomed prominent musicians, creating an environment where music and creativity were part of daily life. This early exposure nurtured her appreciation for the arts long before she began expressing herself professionally.
As a child, she actively participated in her church’s music team at Revival Word Church. The group regularly created songs inspired by weekly sermons, helping her develop her songwriting and vocal abilities from a young age—even as the youngest member.
Education
TY Bello earned a degree in Economics from the University of Lagos. Although she initially explored journalism, she later transitioned into photography and music, where she found her true calling. Her academic background, while not directly tied to the arts, contributed to her disciplined and intentional approach to her creative pursuits.
Musical Beginnings: The KUSH Era
During her time at university, she collaborated musically with Lara George, Dayo Torimiro, and Emem Ema. Together, they formed the group KUSH. The band gained recognition in the early 2000s with their hit single “Let’s Live Together,” which brought them into the spotlight. Although their time together was relatively brief, they released an album before disbanding. This period played a key role in introducing TY Bello to a wider audience and establishing her presence in gospel music.
Solo Music Career
After KUSH disbanded, she launched her solo career, which quickly expanded beyond expectations.
In 2008, she released her debut album Greenland, produced by Mosa Adegboye. The project, developed over two years, reflected themes of love, family, and national identity, and earned recognition at major Nigerian music awards. The title track, in particular, became known for its message of hope and encouragement.
She later announced her second album, The Future, which was released in 2011. The lead single gained widespread popularity and became an anthem of hope and aspiration across Nigeria.
Her discography has since grown to include multiple albums released between 2008 and 2024, showcasing her consistency and evolution as an artist.
Signature Sound and Spontaneous Worship
TY Bello’s music stands out for its blend of deep spirituality and creative exploration. Her sound is marked by soulful melodies and reflective lyrics rooted in her Christian faith.
One of her most notable contributions to gospel music is her “Spontaneous Worship” sessions. These gatherings involve creating songs in real time, without prior preparation, resulting in fresh and unrehearsed expressions of worship. These sessions, often shared live, combine music, prayer, and encouragement, creating a unique and immersive spiritual experience.
Photography Career
Alongside her music, TY Bello has built a highly respected career in photography. She began exploring photography after her band dissolved, at a time when it was not widely regarded as a professional path in Nigeria. Over time, she became one of the country’s most celebrated portrait photographers.
Her work is known for its emotional depth and storytelling quality. She has photographed prominent public figures, including three Nigerian presidents, and has contributed extensively to major publications like ThisDay Style.
She is also part of the photography collective Depth of Field, which has helped elevate the standard of photography in Nigeria.
A defining moment in her photography career occurred in 2016 when she discovered Olajumoke Orisaguna, a street hawker who accidentally appeared in a photoshoot. Recognizing her potential, TY Bello helped launch her modeling career, transforming her life and drawing global attention to the power of opportunity and visibility.
Philanthropic Work and Social Advocacy
Beyond her creative work, TY Bello is deeply involved in philanthropy. She organizes annual photography exhibitions to raise funds for orphanages and leads Link-a-Child, an NGO focused on supporting vulnerable children.
She has also participated in social advocacy, including a campaign against sexual violence. Drawing from her own personal experiences, which she has openly shared, she has used her platform to raise awareness about abuse and support survivors.
Her contributions to social causes have earned her recognition from various organizations.
Personal Life
She married Kashetu Bello in 2009, and the couple welcomed twin boys, Christian and Christopher, in 2014.
Before becoming a mother, she faced years of struggle with endometriosis and infertility. After nearly a decade, she conceived through IVF. Her openness about this journey has inspired many women dealing with similar challenges.

Over the years, TY Bello has received numerous awards for her work in music and photography. These include honors from the Nigerian Entertainment Awards, ThisDay Awards, and recognition for her advocacy efforts. She has also been nominated for awards celebrating young leaders in arts and humanitarian work.
